Prof Honored for Scholarship and Creativity by SUNY Chancellor

Dr. Alireza Ebrahimi, an associate professor in the Management, Marketing & Information Systems Department of the School of Business at SUNY College at Old Westbury, has been recognized by the State University of New York Board of Trustees with the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities.

"His dedication to the College and the School of Business has earned him the respect of colleagues and students throughout his 23 years at Old Westbury," said College President Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, while presenting the honor during the College's 40th Commencement Ceremony. "Dr. Ebrahimi's sustained passion for scholarship, as manifested through his research, and the continuous flow of positive comments from colleagues and students alike speak to the quality and creativity he shows both in the classroom and out."

His research, published papers, and presentations are focused on the integration of scholarship and technology with teaching and learning. This work has led Dr. Ebrahimi to file for a patent for a Visual Plan Construct Language that he believes can move the concept of computer programming beyond text-based programming languages like FORTRAN, Visual Basic C and C++ and Java.

In addition to his research, which has been published in numerous journals and peer reviews and which he has presented at national and international conferences, Dr. Ebrahimi authored a text book, C++ Programming Easy Ways, Volume I and II, that is in use at several universities and colleges.

A 1994 winner of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. Ebrahimi earned his B.S. from New York Institute of Technology, his M.S. from New York University and his Ph.D. from Polytechnic University.

How Much Must Managers Know About Technology?

Dr. Alireza Ebrahimi, an Associate Professor in the Management, Marketing & Information Systems Department at SUNY College at Old Westbury, published "Why Managers Should Become Better Acquainted With Programming Issues, Web Source Code, and Technology" in the November 2005 edition of The International Journal of Applied Management and Technology.

Ebrahimi's article touches on the controversial debate over how well managers need to be acquainted with the areas of information technology and programming. In his work, Ebrahimi states that managers need to know more about information technology and to actively participate in the IT decision-making team. Furthermore, he suggests how managers can incrementally acquire some elementary knowledge of programming issues and web source coding so that they can be better prepared to manage in a dynamic market where changes are made in nanoseconds.

"With the increasing demand of the e-market, firms will need managers who understand the technology, and are able to deal with the possibility of chaos and uncertainty without interrupting business progress," writes Ebrahimi. "Programming and its operating issues may determine the success for some and root of failure for others."

The International Journal of Applied Management and Technology (IJAMT) is an on-line refereed journal and is sponsored by the Management division of Walden University. The Journal encourages collaborative and multi-disciplinary examinations of important issues in business and technology management as well as engages scholars and scholar-practitioners in a dynamic and important dialogue. The content of the publication can be accessed at www.ijamt.org.

Dr. Ebrahimi earned a B.S. from New York Institute of Technology, a M.S. from New York University and a Ph.D. from Polytechnic University. He was recognized by the State University of New York with its prestigious Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1994.
