A.1. Course Description: This course will focus on fundamentals of database design and applications from a management perspective. Topics will include database applications in business organizations and non-profits, user needs analysis, database design, database security, and database extensions.

A.2. Intended Audience:    MIS majors and interested business and other majors.

C. Mode of Instruction:

The class consists of both lecture and lab. During the lab, there will be demonstrations using Internet and web technologies.

D. Student Responsibilities:

  1. Each student will be expected to complete project
  2. There will be a test, midterm and final exam.
  3. Students must plan to spend a minimum of two (2) hours per week outside of the class working with computer.

Course Policies:                                                              

Four or more absences may lead to failure                                                     
All work submitted for grading must be the student's own.
Student is responsible to obtain missing works
Each assignment is due one week (2 classes) later.                                          
The assignment will not be accepted after it has been solved.                        
Each week a late assignment will be divided by 2.

Project:

Part 1:
Compare two existing databases according to their efficiency, friendliness, compatibility, and web-orientation. For each database, explain how it is integrated with VB .Net, PHP, Perl, Java, C++, C#, and other languages. Each student should specialize on one particular database.

Part 2:
For a manager to do his job, build two databases using different tools for each. Specify the differences and similarities. and explain which one is better and why.

Each presentation is worth 5 points.
