*** On Tuesdays bring Volume 1 of Programming Easy Ways and on Thursday's bring Volume 2***
Thursday March 8th 2007
1) Midterm Discussion. The midterm is going to be on March 20th. The midterm will cover everything we have gone over so far in this class and will include your analysis of your school website. We will be asking questions on the appearance layer and the findings from class on Thursday March 8th 2007 and before.
Concentrate on the 7X2 C's and how they relate to website and search engine analysis.
The 7x2 are:
content, context- The Website has relevant meaning to its environment.
correctness, credibility- Is the site information correct and does it rely on credible sources.
currency, continuity- Is the website up to date and is there a flow to the information on the site.
completeness, coverage
consistency, conciseness
compelling, complement
community, customization
2) Today we are going to concentrate on the appearance of the websites of selected Long Island Colleges and Universities.
You will need to do a one page report on the problems you find on your chosen site for today's class.
We are looking at these college websites with a critical eye and are performing "Quality Assurance" work.
QA work ensures that a website works correctly and satisfies the 7X2 Criteria well.
Last class we analyzed Stony Brooks website. We found that it had issues in the HTML layer of our criteria. There is too much unnecessary code in the HTML of the page.
Server is considered part of the domain layer.
We are looking at SUNY Farmingdale's website.
We looked at the Computer Systems Dept website to check for the 7C's
We found that the department sites were not consistent with the design of the school site.
There was a section called New Courses had one course in it and it wasn't clear what a new course was- new this decade? new this year?
St Joseph's College of NY had a video on their perspective student's page which is a good feature as long as the video doesn't take a long time to load and slow down the site.
The CIS dept. webpage has a missing image from its page. This is a fault of content.
C.W. Post's site is not compelling and lacks meaningful context appropriate content.
Dowling College used too much blue on their site.
